CMS Offers Continuing Education Program To Primary Care Physicians

The Centers For Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has launched a national program designed to help primary care physicians earn credit for their efforts to improve care.  Participating physicians can earn up to thirty (30) Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits per year based on their involvement in quality improvement projects developed by Quality Insights of Delaware.  These projects are focused on care provided in physician offices and/or outpatient clinics in each of three clinical areas: diabetes care, adult immunizations, and breast cancer screening.  Additional clinical areas may be added in the future.

To receive CME credit, the physician must:

  • Enroll in the program with Quality Insights of Delaware.
  • Implement a quality improvement intervention system change in one or more clinical areas designed to improve performance on specified quality indicators.
  • Implement an ongoing measurement process to assess clinical performance and evaluate the impact of the interventions system changes made in selected
  • processes of care.
  • Periodically review the data and make additional changes as indicated.
  • This program is part of a national pilot project by CMS, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Family Physicians to evaluate the impact of CME on quality improvement.  Quality Insights of Delaware, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization, will administer the pilot program in Delaware.  To obtain more information about the CME program, contact Edward R. Sobel, DO, Director of Health Care Quality Improvement Projects, at 1-866-475-9669, extension 112.
